Hello, my name is Millie and I am currently a student at sixth form. This summer I was fortunate enough to be able to do a two week work placement at Ambitions Personnel in the Lincoln branch. Over the course of the two weeks I’ve had the opportunity to learn about several different roles within a recruitment agency, and take part in the jobs that are required in a busy office.

On my first day I was greeted by such a friendly team of staff and given a quick tour of the office. Lizzie Peck, who works in HR and training, gave me an induction and introduced me to the different duties that each individual does. I then started with some basic office work which was very useful as I have never had any office experience before. This involved putting sets of documents into chronological order, searching the archives for details and sorting through old files. Whilst doing this, I was around the team who were dealing with clients, so was getting a better understanding of the business and listening to the different queries people have to deal with. By the afternoon I was shown how to answer the phone and put people through to the person they requested to speak to.

I then moved on to doing referencing. This involved contacting a company, via telephone or email that a person has previously worked for, asking for information about a person’s employment with them. I also got the chance to shadow Shannon on reception. This showed me all of the different queries that arise daily and how they are dealt with. Some of the things that Shannon has shown me are how to conduct English tests, how to mark tests and how to help people with filling out application cards and holiday forms. Greeting people on reception and communicating with a range of nationalities has developed my communication skills and given me the experience of how to deal with lots of different people.

Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed my two weeks at Ambitions. I have been given lots of experience and the opportunity to learn and develop a range of new skills that will help me in future. Meeting and working with lots of new people has given me a lot more confidence, and will help me when working with people in the future. I think work placements are really useful for young people to do and I am extremely grateful to Ambitions Personnel for the experience and knowledge they have given me.
